The Craig Story
In 1905 Craig Bros. was founded in Vermilion, Alberta by my Great Great Grandfather ( John A.M. Craig) and Great Great Uncle (William C. "Chum" Craig). From the humble 1905 start these two Craig brothers guided the business to a point where three branches were added; one in North Battleford and two in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.
In 1927 Craig Bros. bought out Pickle and Johnson in North Battleford. The King Street store was ran by my Great Grandfather L.M. (Don) Craig. My Grandfather, Bob Craig had a role at the store from a young age delivering groceries with his horse and cart. In 1976 Bob Craig took over the North Battleford store until he retired in 2000. I can remember as a young girl visiting my "Bubba" at the store and feeling so proud. Some of the staff members worked at the store for many years and became friends that were like family. Christmas morning we had to wait for what seemed like a very long time until Connie and Ida arrived.
In 2002 my mom, Janet Campbell (Craig), Blair and Jennifer (Craig) Atcheynum and my Grandmother Gerry Craig, opened Craig & Co. ladies wear. I was in Grade 9 when the store opened and worked periodically throughout the years. Many adventures were had! Parade floats, fashion shows, ladies nights, buying trips, staff parties, and all the people you meet along the way....
In March 2021 my Mom Janet, the sole owner of Craig & Co. retired. For 20 years the store flourished and was widely known and respected because the business principles established by her founders in 1905 were followed. I will always feel fortunate for the wealth of knowledge I obtained; something that can't be taught, only experienced.
